Cat Fish Curry (Telangana Style)

Cat fish Curry












Ingredients:

  • 4 pieces catfish / magur maach (medium size) 
  • 1 medium size onion (chopped) 
  • 1/2 medium size tomato (chopped)
  • 2 green chilies (slitted)
  • 1/8 tsp. black mustard seeds
  • 1/8 tsp. cumin seeds
  • 6-8 curry leaves 
  • 1/4 tsp. red chili powder
  • 1/4 + 1/4 tsp. turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp. coriander powder
  • 6-8 fenugreek seeds (make powder)
  • 1 -2 cloves (make powder)
  • 1/4 tsp. tamarind paste
  • 2-3 tbsp. oil
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 cup water
  • Coriander leaves (for garnish) 

Making Procedure:


Wash the fish pieces, marinate them with 1/4 tsp. turmeric powder and salt. Then keep aside for 5 minutes.

Heat oil in a kadai. When the oil begin to smoke, reduce heat and slowly add fish pieces. Fry them both sides until they turn golden colour. Then remove them from the oil and keep aside.

Now add mustard and cumin seeds into the same oil. When they start spluttering add curry leaves and chopped onion. Fry till the onion become soft. 
Add chopped tomato and green chilies. Sauté till the oil separates.
Then add turmeric, red chili, coriander, fenugreek, clove powders and salt. Fry for a minute and then add tamarind paste & water. Stir it and bring to boil.

When it starts boiling add the fried fish pieces and cook it covered for 10-15 minutes on low heat or the gravy thicken.

Now the fish curry is ready to serve. Garnish with few chopped coriander leaves. 
Serve hot with plain steamed rice.
